This gem is not yet another book lauding the power of please and thank you, or a take the high road reminder, but a real-life handbook for any awkward situation that you might encounter. Not only is she an accomplished writer, but she is a Doctor of Physical Therapy as well, working closely in intimate and delicate situations with many people during her career. Throughout our time together, Julie invites us in, cup of tea in hand, to chat, learn, grow, and FINALLY come to a place where we hunt for the awkward so we can practice our new skills! In this offering, Julie leads us through a lifelong progression of tense situations, cringe-worthy moments, and resolutions that create calmness rather than stress. She does this through a combination of elegantly erring on the side of decorum, and when necessary, finding a foothold for standing our ground with a smile and not losing our cool. Julie has previously (during college) worked in retail and collections, so her experience is vast. Throughout the book we find specific examples of actual conversations/comments and their responses which often times will give one or both people a way to back out/deescalate the situation without further embarrassment, or the mood of an event going sour. I enjoyed every part of this experience, from angry retail customers to handling inappropriate and uncomfortable comments. This book is a must have for everyone!
